Protect your assets from disaster

Recently my niece and her family lost their home and all the contents to a house fire. The fire was discovered in the garage and all of them got out of the house safely. Within a few minutes there were a couple of explosions and by the time the fire department arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames.

This family lost everything and we have learned some very valuable lessons.

You’ve heard that it’s a good idea to video, take pictures, etc. of everything you have inside your home. The reason is when something like this happens, the homeowner has to itemize the personal property that was in the home. When a home is a total loss, as it was in this was the case, there isn’t much left to go through and itemize. This has been an incredibly difficult task, emotionally and time consuming.

So before you are faced with a catastrophic event (fire, tornado, flood, etc.), take the time to get those pictures or video of the inside of your home and store them in somewhere other than in the home!
